HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Order of the Marist Brotherhood was founded in 1817 by Saint Marcellin Champagnat. He was born in Marles, a small village in the south of France, in 1789 and died in 1840, having dedicated himself to the education of the young.

The order he founded - after having been recognized by the Catholic Church and the French State - expanded and dispersed establishing schools and offering services to young people.
The history of Leonteio Lykeio starts in 1838 when a Catholic minister establishes a small primary school named " AGHIOS DIONYSIOS ". In 1889 this primary school acquired a Junior High and a Senior High school. Pope Leo XIII financially assisted the school's growth and the school indebted to him, was named after him. The school's name " AGHIOS DIONYSIOS " is still maintained by the Primary School of Leonteio Lykeio in Nea Smyrni.

In 1907 the management of the school is entrusted to the Marist Brotherhood, who have helped it to develop ever since. In 1916 a new branch of the school is established in Patra, which was in operation until 1945. In 1924 Leonteio Lykeio Patission is established in the same place it is situated today. In 1962 the original school, located in Sina Street, is transfered to Nea Smyrni where it has been in operation ever since with the name " LEONTEIO LYKEIO OF NEA SMYRNI" and has expanded. In 1974 a new wing and in 1997 a new Primary School building is added to Leonteio Lykeio Patission.

Today Leonteio Lykeio Patission comprises a Primary School of 600 students
and 30 teachers and a Junior & Senior High School of 1000 students and 80 teachers. The direction of the school is in the hands of 7 Brothers who belong to the order of the Marist Brotherhood.
